How Did Humanistic Dance Therapy Emerge?

Humanistic Dance Therapy originated from the integration of humanistic psychology and the therapeutic use of movement. Emerging in the second half of the 20th century, it was developed as an approach that recognizes the inseparable connection between body, emotions, mind, and personal growth.

Its main objective is to create a safe space where individuals can explore their inner experiences through movement, fostering self-awareness, emotional expression, and holistic well-being.

Movement: The Natural Language of Emotions

Before words, there was movement. Our bodies constantly express what we feel, often beyond conscious awareness. Humanistic Dance Therapy uses movement as an alternative and complementary form of emotional expression. Through conscious and creative movement, emotions can be recognized, expressed, and released in a healthy way. When emotions remain unexpressed for long periods, they may manifest as chronic tension, fatigue, stress, physical discomfort, or other psychosomatic symptoms. Movement helps prevent emotions from becoming 'trapped' in the body by allowing them to flow, be acknowledged, and transformed. By reconnecting with bodily sensations, individuals develop a deeper understanding of their emotional world and cultivate greater emotional balance.
